The 198th FS is the group's flying unit and has operated the F-16A ADF since May 1992. The unit was formed as the 198th Fighter Squadron in November 1947 at Isla Grande Airport with P-47Ns. It was redesignated the 198th FIS in November 1952 prior to converting to the F-86E, which involved a partial move to San Juan Airport. The 156th FIG was formed in May 1956 when the move to San Juan was completed and the unit re-equipped with the F-86D. F-86Hs were assigned in 1960 as the 198th became a TFS, prior to converting to the F-104C/D in mid-1967. The Starfighter was retired in July 1975 when the unit converted to the A-7D.
